What is the primary purpose of an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS)?

An Intrusion Prevention System is designed to inspect traffic and actively stop malicious activity before it reaches protected systems. The key distinction is prevention: an IPS can block, drop, reset, or otherwise filter traffic that matches known exploit patterns, malicious signatures, protocol anomalies, or policy violations.
