A talent development (TD) professional has been tasked with increasing the value of learning within...

Increasing the organizational value of learning should begin with direct engagement of leaders to understand business and talent-development needs. A facilitated meeting allows the TD professional to identify strategic priorities, performance concerns, capability requirements, and expectations for the learning function.

This establishes the basis for aligning learning investments with organizational objectives rather than simply increasing the visibility or volume of existing programs. When leaders participate in defining needs, the TD function can design solutions that address meaningful business requirements and gain stronger stakeholder commitment.

Ensuring TD professionals understand business goals is valuable, but the organization first needs an explicit assessment of what leaders require from talent development. ROI reports can demonstrate historical value but do not determine future priorities. A marketing campaign may increase program awareness without ensuring that the programs themselves address the most important organizational needs.

A learning culture becomes valuable when development is embedded in business strategy and supported by leadership. Needs assessment with organizational leaders therefore provides the initial bridge between learning activities and the capabilities the organization needs to perform successfully.
