Likert scales, semantic differential scales, and alternative-response items all produce structured responses that can readily be converted into quantitative data.
A Likert scale asks respondents to indicate a degree of agreement, frequency, importance, satisfaction, or another ordered response. Those responses can be summarized numerically. A semantic differential presents opposite descriptors along a rating continuum, allowing respondents to indicate where their perception falls between the two poles. Alternative-response questions generally provide fixed choices, such as yes/no or true/false, making frequency and percentage calculations straightforward.
Open-ended questions generate qualitative narrative information rather than standardized numerical responses. Completion items may also produce unstructured answers unless specifically designed with numeric responses. Their presence therefore makes the other combinations less consistently quantitative.
Quantitative survey formats are particularly useful when TD professionals need to compare groups, establish frequencies, examine trends, calculate averages, or create dashboards. However, the survey designer must ensure that the response format matches the question being investigated. Quantification alone does not guarantee that the survey is measuring the intended construct accurately.
