An adaptive assessment changes subsequent questions, difficulty, content, or pathways according to the learner's previous responses. The system therefore tailors the assessment experience dynamically rather than presenting every learner with an identical sequence.
For example, a learner who answers several questions correctly may receive progressively more challenging items, while a learner who demonstrates difficulty may receive additional diagnostic questions or content at a more appropriate level. This can improve measurement efficiency and provide a more precise picture of learner capability.
Artificial intelligence is a broader category of technology and may power adaptive systems, but it does not specifically describe the assessment approach in the question. Augmented reality overlays digital content onto the physical environment. Virtual reality creates an immersive simulated environment. Neither is inherently designed to adjust question presentation according to learner responses.
Adaptive assessment is useful when TD professionals need personalized evaluation, efficient diagnostic testing, or differentiated learning pathways. The key characteristic is continual adjustment based on evidence generated by the individual learner.
