The hydraulic model is a type of movement model that simulates the flow of people through egress components based on equations derived from fluid dynamics. It is also known as the single-parameter estimation model because it uses only one parameter, the effective width, to describe the movement of people. The hydraulic model does not account for the behavioral aspects of egress, such as pre-evacuation time, decision making, group dynamics, or communication. A behavioral simulation model is a different type of egress model that incorporates these factors.
