What type of quantitative research explores the source and/or reasoning for existing differences?

Causal-comparative research (also called ex post facto research) investigates the causes or reasons for existing differences between groups. It seeks to determine the effect of a variable that cannot be manipulated directly, by comparing groups that differ on that variable. “Causal-comparative research is used to explore possible cause-and-effect relationships by observing existing differences among groups.”
