In data center environments where physical space, budget, or switch port availability is limited, VxRail architectural standards offer flexibility regarding network topology. While separating out-of-band (OOB) management traffic onto a dedicated functional switch is a best-practice recommendation, it is not a rigid physical requirement. VxRail deployment fully supports combining both the primary VxRail network traffic uplinks (including Management, vSAN, vMotion, and Virtual Machine networks) and the iDRAC management uplinks onto the same pair of Top-of-Rack (TOR) switches.

To maintain security boundaries and data integrity within this shared switch topology, logical separation must be implemented using IEEE 802.1Q VLAN tagging. This allows the iDRAC traffic and systemic VxRail cluster traffic to traverse the same physical switch fabric while remaining completely isolated at Layer 2. Other options are incorrect because IPv6 multicast handles automated (not manual) node discovery via Neighbor Discovery Protocol, and a Virtual Distributed Switch (VDS) is natively deployed and configured by the VxRail Manager during initialization rather than being a mandatory preconfigured prerequisite on the physical switches.
