The EMT is experiencing a fight-or-flight response after taking a patient emergently to the hospital.

The fight-or-flight response is the body’s immediate, automatic reaction to stress, which defines the alarm stage of the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS).

In EMT training, the GAS model is taught as:

Alarm – initial reaction (fight-or-flight, adrenaline surge)

Resistance – body attempts to adapt to ongoing stress

Exhaustion – depletion of resources

Since the EMT is actively experiencing the acute physiological stress response right after a high-stress call , this clearly places them in the alarm stage .
