The Pure Storage product portfolio is strategically segmented to address different tiering requirements in the modern datacenter. While the FlashArray//X and FlashArray//XL are optimized for absolute performance and ultra-low latency using Triple-Level Cell (TLC) flash and Storage Class Memory (SLC), the FlashArray//C and FlashArray//E lines are engineered specifically for capacity consolidation and tier-2 workloads.

To achieve massive storage density at a much lower cost per terabyte, the //C and //E models exclusively utilize Quad-Level Cell (QLC) flash architecture. QLC technology stores four bits of data per NAND cell, significantly increasing physical capacity compared to TLC, while the Purity operating system intelligently mitigates the inherent wear-leveling and write-amplification challenges traditionally associated with dense QLC media.

Because QLC and TLC DirectFlash Modules (DFMs) share the exact same physical U.2 form factor and slot seamlessly into the identical drive bays, Implementation Engineers must be able to visually distinguish them onsite to prevent accidentally mixing drive types within a single chassis. Pure Storage strictly color-codes the physical release latches on the drive carriers to prevent this mistake: QLC DFMs feature distinct gray tabs , whereas standard TLC DFMs feature blue tabs. Identifying the gray tabs ensures the engineer is working with the correct //C or //E capacity modules before proceeding with the physical admission process.
