The SolarWinds platform uses the concept of " dependencies " to handle parent-child relationships. When you configure dependencies (via Manage Dependencies), child objects such as interfaces will show as " unreachable " if the parent node is " down " or unresponsive, rather than " down " or " unknown " .

" The Manage Dependencies feature allows administrators to specify parent-child relationships. If a parent device is down, all child objects will be marked as ' unreachable ' , preventing unnecessary alerts and false positives. "

This is a best practice to avoid alert storms and to properly reflect network hierarchy.
