Solar photovoltaic panels combined with battery energy storage provide both operational and resilience benefits. During normal conditions, the photovoltaic system generates renewable electricity that can reduce grid purchases and operational carbon emissions. The battery can store excess generation, manage peak demand, and support selected critical loads when the electrical grid fails. With appropriate controls and islanding capability, the system can maintain essential healthcare functions without relying exclusively on combustion-based generators. A natural-gas generator and a larger diesel generator provide backup capacity, but neither materially improves routine energy efficiency or advances the project’s decarbonization objectives. Combustion generators may still be retained for extended emergencies, but the photovoltaic-and-storage strategy delivers the strongest combination of renewable energy, load management, reduced emissions, and operational resilience.
