A new mixed-use development includes residential units and commercial spaces.

A no-idling zone directly reduces local exposure to vehicle exhaust at entrances, outdoor gathering areas, air intakes, pedestrian routes, and regularly occupied spaces. Idling vehicles release particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and other pollutants without providing useful transportation movement. Appropriate signage, pavement markings, operational policies, loading procedures, and enforcement should be used to make the zone effective. Mandatory carpooling may reduce total vehicle trips but does not prevent participating vehicles from idling near the building. Indoor plants cannot reliably remove the volume or range of traffic pollutants required for meaningful exposure control. A no-idling policy therefore provides the most direct strategy for protecting occupants and pedestrians while also reducing unnecessary fuel consumption and transportation emissions, both of which support LEED v5 quality-of-life and decarbonization goals.
