A new theater is being designed to enhance acoustical comfort for its audiences.

Ceiling baffles and sound-absorbing wall panels reduce excessive reverberation by absorbing sound energy that would otherwise reflect repeatedly from hard interior surfaces. In a theater, controlling reverberation time is necessary for speech intelligibility, musical clarity, and audience comfort. The absorptive materials should be selected and distributed according to room volume, occupancy, intended performances, background-noise criteria, and the required acoustic response. Hard flooring generally increases sound reflection and may worsen reverberation unless balanced by substantial absorptive treatment elsewhere. Soundproof glass can reduce sound transmission between spaces, but it remains a reflective interior surface and does not directly control reverberation within the auditorium. Therefore, absorptive ceiling and wall treatments are the most effective listed strategy.
