SnapMirror active sync is the ONTAP data-protection technology designed to provide Zero Recovery Time Objective for business-critical SAN applications. It synchronously replicates protected application data between ONTAP clusters and uses host multipathing plus ONTAP Mediator-assisted automatic failover so that application access can continue when the primary storage system or site becomes unavailable. NetApp explicitly describes SnapMirror active sync as providing Zero RTO or Transparent Application Failover for SAN environments. SnapMirror asynchronous cannot provide Zero RTO because replication is not continuously synchronous and recovery requires a failover workflow.
