A project manager is presented with a roadmap that excludes most of their recommendations.

Because the sponsor accepts the roadmap, the project manager should work constructively within governance rather than escalate prematurely or disengage. First, the project manager should discuss the reasoning behind the roadmap with the influential stakeholder (E) to understand underlying concerns, assumptions, and constraints. This supports relationship management, reduces resistance, and may uncover risks or compliance issues tied to the stakeholder’s preferred practices. Second, the project manager should align the roadmap within the project framework and perform a risk analysis (A). This translates the roadmap into the project’s delivery and control structure, identifies gaps versus standard procedures, and documents impacts to scope, schedule, cost, quality, and risk exposure. These two actions together allow the project manager to both engage the stakeholder effectively and protect the project by making risks visible and manageable. Immediately aligning deliverables (B) without risk analysis can embed avoidable issues. PMO review (C) may be appropriate later if governance or standards are threatened, but it is not the first move when sponsor acceptance exists. Reassignment (D) is unprofessional and avoids accountability.
