Natural Language Processing (NLP) is the branch of artificial intelligence concerned with enabling computers to process, understand, interpret, and generate human language. Therefore, option B is the most complete definition.
Option A describes part of NLP's practical purpose but is narrower. Interaction between humans and machines through language is enabled by NLP, but NLP also includes tasks such as intent recognition, text classification, summarisation, sentiment analysis, information extraction, and language generation. Option C is incorrect because numerical-data analysis is not the defining focus of NLP. Option D is also too narrow because machine translation is only one application of NLP.
Within a Service Desk environment, NLP can support virtual agents, automated categorisation, intent detection, knowledge retrieval, ticket summarisation, and conversational interfaces. SDA v9 identifies NLP as a common application of AI in IT service management and specifically includes the benefits, challenges, and common examples of AI and automation within service management.
