The HPE Compute Ops Management (COM) service is a cloud-native management platform delivered through HPE GreenLake . To manage a physical server directly from the cloud using the activation key method , the following architectural hierarchy must be followed:
HPE GreenLake Inventory: Before a server can be successfully " activated " or managed by a specific service like COM, the HPE GreenLake platform must first recognize the hardware. This is achieved by adding the server ' s Serial Number (SN) and Product ID (PID) to the workspace ' s Device Inventory . This step " claims " the device for that specific customer workspace and proves ownership.
Activation Key Generation: Once the workspace is established, an administrator generates an Activation Key from within the Compute Ops Management console. This key is often associated with specific settings like server groups, locations, or subscription tiers.
iLO Integration: The activation key is then entered into the server ' s iLO (HPE Integrated Lights-Out) web interface (specifically iLO 5 v3.09+, iLO 6 v1.64+, or iLO 7). When the iLO initiates an outbound connection to the HPE GreenLake cloud, it presents its unique hardware identity (SN/PID) and the activation key. If the SN/PID matches an entry in the GreenLake inventory for that workspace, the onboarding process is finalized, and the server appears as " Connected " in COM.
Network Flexibility: While iLO requires internet access to reach the cloud endpoints, it can use either the Dedicated iLO Network Port or the Shared Network Port (LOM/FlexibleLOM). There is no requirement to use only the dedicated port, making Option B incorrect.
OS Independence: One of the primary benefits of COM is that it operates at the " out-of-band " management level. It does not require an operating system to be installed or even for the server to be powered on (as long as auxiliary power is available to the iLO), making Option A incorrect.
Key Technical Takeaway:
The HPE GreenLake Inventory serves as the foundational " Source of Truth " for all cloud-managed hardware. Without the serial number and product ID being registered in the inventory, the cloud gateway will reject the activation attempt from the iLO for security and multi-tenancy reasons.
